Fed: PM rejects claims govt destroying shipping
CANBERRA, Aug 8 AAP - Prime Minister John Howard today rejected claims the governmentwas trying to destroy the Australian shipping industry by giving permits to foreign crews.
Unions are celebrating a victory in their campaign against foreign-flagged and foreign-crewedships operating on Australian routes.
The High Court yesterday unanimously ruled that foreign-flagged and foreign-crewedships be subject to Australian awards.
Unions and the federal opposition had claimed that the government was intent on destroyingAustralian shipping by allowing foreign-flagged and foreign-crewed vessels permits torun local routes.
But Mr Howard rejected the suggestion.
"Well, we haven't been trying to destroy the industry. I reject that completely," hesaid on ABC Radio in Hobart.
"And I think the decision obviously must be obeyed by everybody.
"It's a decision of the High Court, and I certainly don't quarrel with a decision ofthe High Court, that says if people are employed on the Australian coastline they shouldall be employed on equal conditions."
